 DESIGN ENGINEERING IN GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

Good morning students,

        Today we will learn a very much important subject/topic that offered to you in GTU (Gujarat Technological University) syllabus named as Design Engineering. We will cover all four semesters 3rd,4th, 5th, and 6th SEM. The topic will in different parts for easy to understand. What is Design Engineering?

Design Engineering is very unique and pioneering initiation in Engineering Education by GTU which is based on globally accepted and implemented the “Design Thinking” methodology by designers and engineers.

                            One of the key objectives of this initiation is to infuse the Design Thinking mindset into engineers of the future with pervading the methodology into core subjects also. It is a first of its kind initiative in the Indian Education System (In process branches such as Chemical Engineering and IT, one uses the term ‘Project-based Learning’ for a similar idea). Four modules, in Design Spine, have been introduced from 3rd semester to 6th semester in every branch of the engineering curriculum of its all affiliating colleges across the Gujarat State.

Design thinking process may be divided into six simple yet iterative phases as shown below. At every semester students need to follow this whole process for their projects.

It is a general process for any kind of design thinking. So as per the above, you will find why it is needed to learn design engineering in recent times.

The flow diagram shows the procedure and idea of design thinking so before you start your semester wise work, you should know about the procedure of design engineering.

Why you learn design engineering?

Every engineer is doing smart work with hard work according to his/her complete scheduled plan work. So before starting any work, paperwork must be needed. It can optimized time and work.

Design Engineering gives a much more innovative idea of work, develops your mindset, and teaches time management, and precisely paperwork.it also teaches how to make a prototype model.

It is growing because many companies are stuck within their own business model. They find it very difficult to change, but they need to because of their market, their customers’ expectations, and the employee expectations are changing. This is also about retaining a customer and entrepreneurial mentality in your organization. The business model and organizational model is usually broken. So there are a lot of questions out there, and they want to use a methodology that helps them. Design Thinking offers the necessary holistic approach. It is very helpful for companies with those needs. So it is not because Design Thinking is new or it is so brilliant. It is just because companies have a need, and Design Thinking addresses that need. Ideally, nobody will talk about Design Thinking, because it is part of what you do, it is part of your DNA. It is not a special kind of thing that you do, it is about culture and behavior, ideally, that would be the future: a change in mindset culture, and behavior.

What are the applications of design engineering?

                   (1) You will have several innovative design ideas for your products.

(2) You can do any work in any situation.

(3) Design thinking procedure develops your mind for all activities required in it.

(4) You can estimate your final product very much precisely.

(5) You can also predict other conditions and situations which are not seen.

(6) Your thoughts and work impress anyone towards you.

(7) Any industries, small/large businesses, and/or educational institutes can select your basic project and give you the best opportunities in the future.

(8) Practices of design engineering thoughts you will have the best project work in project subject offered in the 7^th and 8^th semesters in GTU.

(9) Project makes you an entrepreneur in a specific area of interest.
